I took in as many college games as possible over the weekend. Alot of my notes will find their way into profiles, but here are some impressions on a few pitchers from Saturday’s UC Irvine-Southern game.
Matt Whitehouse, LHP, UC Irvine- Whitehouse lacks great stuff, but he knows how to pitch. His fastball came in from 85-89. His curve (79-80) was his best pitch on the day and he used it as a strikeout pitch. He also threw a cutter at 82 with late movement. He changed speeds well and did a good job of mixing his pitches.
Kyle Hooper, RHP, UC Irvine- A big righthander, Hooper has a prototypical pitcher’s frame at 6’5/220. His fastball on the day (according to TV) was 89-90, but there is a little more there and he did a good job of pitching downhill. He has a big curve that was from 76 -80. He attacked hitters and showed good control of all his pitches.
Jose De Leon, RHP, Southern- A sophomore and eligible in 2013, De Leon’s fastball was reported to be mid 90′s, but it was 90-92 on the day. He relied very heavily on his fastball and had problems with his control, hitting 3 batters on the day and walking 2 in 3.2 innings.
