Draft Prospect Q&A With Paxton De La Garza

I was lucky enough to get in touch with Coronado shortstop Paxton De La Garza recently.  A Preseason Parade All-American, he is one of Texas’ prep prospects to keep an eye on this season.  De La Garza was kind enough to answer some questions for us.  If you would like to know more about De La Garza, check out his draft profile.

Matt Grabusky:  How old were you when you started playing baseball?

Paxton De La Garza:  Ever since I can remember baseball has always been my passion. I’ve never loved something more in my entire life and I wouldn’t be where I am today if I didn’t love the game as much as I do.

MG:  When did you realize that you could have a future in the sport?

PG:  My dream has always been to play in front of thousands at the professional level and I first realized that I could achieve that goal when I started high school baseball and I was already compared to the older players. I knew I had a shot at the next level if I worked hard and, so far, it is something I will continue to strive for.
MG:  What aspects of your game do you consider your strengths?

PG:   I consider the best part of my game to be in the field. I love taking ground balls and making that web gem play in front of the fans, the sound of the crowd when something like that happens is unforgetable. Over the years, I’ve also gained a ton of power and I hit for not only average but for doubles and home runs as well. I feel it is important to make everyone around me better.

MG:  In what areas do you feel your game needs the most work?

PG:   I could increase my speed. I’ve never been the fastest but quickness drills have helped me improve my game.

MG:  Is there a Major League player that you would compare your game with?

PG:   Derek Jeter, he always makes the routine plays and that’s what its all about. He also has surprising power at the plate and I feel I have quite a bit of power myself.

MG:  Who has had the most influence on your baseball career?

PG:  My dad has the most influence on me. He has pushed me for as long as I know and he always tells me to work hard to become the best.  With his positive attitude and encouragement, I’ve been able to compete to my full potential and with confidence. My Dad has always said that if you respect the game and play it right, it will be good to you.

MG:  To this point, what has been the highlight of your baseball career?

PG:  Going to state last year was the most memorable moment in not just baseball but in my entire life. Every team dreams of going to state and few live up to it and being able to feel like a professional player for that one week was a feeling I will never forget.

MG:  What are your goals in the sport going forward?

PG:  My goal is to be able to play in the MLB. Baseball is my life and all I want to do is play and surround myself with incredible athletes that cherish the game just as much as I do.

MG:  Who are the best players you have shared the field with?

PG:  I have shared the field with numerous amounts of great players. Every playoff series a team will have that one standout player that amazes everyone.
MG:  You committed to Missouri.  What put the Tigers over the top in recruiting?

PG:   Missouri was one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. The way the coaches recruited me was awesome. They made me feel apart of something special and it was a great feeling to know that someone out there wanted me as bad as they did and that was what made me realize Missouri was the place for me.

MG:   If baseball ended tomorrow, you would?

PG:  If baseball ended tomorrow, I could honestly say, I wouldnt know how to live. Baseball is why I wake up every morning because its not just a sport to me its a part of my life and I would have no idea what to do if it ended tomorrow.

MG:  What is something that fans would be surprised to learn about Paxton De La Garza?

PG:   I am colored blind. My eye doctor told me that the type I have actually helps me see the ball better against a background of people.

I would like to thank Paxton for taking time out of his schedule to answer these questions for MLB Draft Guide and our readers.  It is very much appreciated.
