Scouting Report:

Everyone knows that when it comes to high school players, stats don’t tell the whole story.  In fact, they don’t tell much of the story at all.  In the case of Austin Fairchild, his 2011 stats for St. Thomas can be tossed into the trash.  Fairchild did finish the season well, holding opponents scoreless over his final 9 innings on the mound.  He is a remarkably better pitcer now than he was for most of his junior season.

Fairchild has a fast arm and uses a 3/4 arm slot.  He is willing to challenge hitters.  Control issues seem to be part of what was holding him back, but reports are that Fairchild has started to hit his spots more regularly.

Fairchild’s fastball sits in the low 90′s, 90-93, with armside run.  More velocity could come as he matures.  He throws both a curve and a slider, both pitches having plus potential.  Fairchild calls the slider his outpitch.  He also has a change, but it is going to need work.

If you are looking for a pitcher on the rise, Fairchild may be your man.
